Harris Tweed®
Harris Tweed® is a type of tweed cloth that comes from the Outer Hebrides islands in Scotland, United Kingdom. In accordance with the 1993 UK Act Of Parliament, Harris Tweed cloth must be: “Handwoven by the islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides, finished in the Outer Hebrides, and made from pure virgin wool dyed and spun in the Outer Hebrides.”
The cloth is only made with pure virgin wools, which are blended together to gain the advantages of their unique characteristics. Most of the wool comes from the Scottish mainland these days but they do include the wool from the islands themselves too into the mix.
Harris Tweed® is truly ‘dyed in the wool’, i.e. the wool is dyed prior to being spun as opposed to dyeing spun yarn. Then they are carded, spun, warped and then woven at the islanders’ own homes, before being finally inspected stamped with the Harris Tweed® Orb mark and then sent off to be made into quality products.
